Hope is ten years old in 2027 and in 4th grade. Debt has risen to 91% of the economy, which is more than twice the 50-year historical average. Annual deficits are over $1 trillion for the sixth straight year and are still growing. Interest payments on the debt have roughly tripled since Hope was born, crowding out investments in areas like education.
About 80% of the growth in government spending since Hope was born has come from health care, Social Security, and interest on the debt. She could see larger classes, fewer teachers, and outdated schools.
