With the nastiness of the campaign getting further behind us and the challenge of the fiscal cliff ahead drawing closer, it’s time for all of us to work together to fix the debt.
Democrats and Republicans in Washington are both signaling that they want to cooperate to address the fiscal cliff and the long-term national debt. We must ensure that the rhetoric becomes reality. As we said in a statement yesterday, “Now that campaign season is over, we urge Congress and the White House to leave partisanship at the door and come together in the coming months to find a fiscally responsible solution to avoid both the year-end fiscal cliff and our nation’s ever-rising debt.”
Policymakers will only work together if we, the people, demand it. To that end, Fix the Debt has launched a major ad campaign in print and online outlets to draw attention to the issue and to recruit Americans from all walks of life to the cause. The message is simple: “Unless we fix the debt, it’ll get in the way of the things that matter most.”
The Citizen’s Petition to Fix the Debt is rapidly approaching 300,000 signatures. We will need to grow that number even more to send a strong message to Washington that inaction is not an option.
If we come together, we can break free of the national debt.
