The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) last week warned yet again that the United States faces rising budget deficits and national debt that will endanger the country and Americans’ pocketbooks. As politicians bicker over a budget, you have a chance to show how you would solve the problem.
Our partners at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget recently launched the new “Debt Fixer.” The tool allows you to make several choices in all parts of the budget and see how those decisions affect the debt in the near and long term.
The new tool is very timely as President Trump’s federal budget proposal received mixed reviews and Congress is having a difficult time agreeing on a budget for next year. The Debt Fixer allows you to make many of the decisions that policymakers are struggling with.
Some options are straight out of the president’s budget plan and all are relevant to issues being debated today, such as health care, taxes, infrastructure, Social Security, and the military. You can also share your experience with your representatives.
The new tool can help educate everyone regarding the fiscal challenges we face and elevate the discussion of the budget and debt. It can be used in classrooms and living rooms, in groups and in private.
